Many local communities in LKSD require their students to include in their curriculum Yup'ik Language and Culture. These programs not only address the State of Alaska Cultural Standards, but also address the state and district content standards in social studies, science, world languages and the arts. The following programs reflect the district's support for the continuing development of academic English while using and strengthening the Yup'ik language:

Yup'ik Language and Culture Programs


Grades K-3 Yup'ik Upingaurluta Integrated Thematic Units
The thematic units meet state and district science, social studies, health & PE content standards, as well as state and district Cultural Standards. Required in Yup'ik language primary programs.

Grades 4-12 Yuuyaraq Curriculum Integrated Thematic Units
Yuuyaraq meets cultural and content standards. It was designed by Yup'ik elders and staff, and is based on Yup'ik ways of being and knowing. Includes traditional values, beliefs, activities, and language, and incorporates Yup'ik grammar and composition. Extent of implementation determined by site ASB.

Yup'ik Language and Culture for Non-speakers
Grades K-6 units cultural units, including traditional Yup'ik activities and values. Some vocabulary development is included.

LKSD Assessment
The LKSD supports a strong assessment program in both Yup'ik and English.
