New Teacher Information
Application Process:
If
you are interested in becoming a new teacher in the Lower Kuskokwim
School DIstrict, please follow the application procedures outlined on
the Lower Kuskokwim School District website. (Just scroll down the homepage and see Employment.)
General Information:
Rural Alaska is
an exciting place to teach. Since we are not on the road system, we
travel by planes. Many different kinds of people teach here in
Chefornak, from experienced "veteran" teachers to
first-year teachers. As a new teacher, you will be welcomed into the
school and village by staff and native people alike. You will also find that there
are many teaching materials and resources available in the school.
Student Body and Culture:
The
student body is 100% Yup'ik Eskimo (also called Native Alaskan). We
have a transition style school where the students are taught in their
native Yup'ik language until grade three. Then they transition to
English, where they receive anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour of
Yup'ik language and culture instruction a day until high school
graduation. You will find that many of the traditional customs are
alive in the community as well as in the school.
Teacher Housing:
Construction of two duplex style units were completed in 2007 and are available for teacher housing. Currently we have some housing with water and sewage and some
without. All units have heating systems, an Incinolet toilet (a toilet
which burns the waste), and water distillers. There are laundry
facilities and showers at the school, which teachers can use at any
time.
