This
is our seventh season for the Kusko Book Express. The idea of
the Kusko Book Express is to provide opportunity for students
to read for enjoyment as well as to promote and maintain literacy
skills over the summer. We serve over a thousand students each
season. The Migrant Education Department in our district hires
several teachers to deliver free books to children at fish camps
(via boats) and in Bethel (via bookmobile). The teachers did
not only give out free books to students, but also introduce
and invite them to explore various genres. The certified teachers
who are involved with this year’s Kusko Book Express project
include: Rafe Johnson, Amelia Savinova, Chris Meier, Dottie
Vasquez and Pam Yancey (coordinator).
The
Kusko Book Express is unique and successful, which draws a great
deal of attention from people far and near. Ann Dixon, Alaskan
children’s author, visited our fish camps this summer
and found it quite intriguing. |
