NANWARCIAR

(Nanwarciar is the lake all right, but it seems to me it’s very deep.  It’s said that a long time ago at this lake the young men made a test and went down before the ice became very thick.  They went down and made a hole and put the skin bucket through the ice.  The skin bucket has got a handle, they put a rock inside and tied a rope on top.  They dropped it down, tried to reach down to the bottom, but never reached the bottom.  They just ran out of rope and pulled it up.  The young man pulled it up.  Maybe they were very rough young men.  They pulled it up.  They wanted to find out what the bottom is like and what the water tastes like.  Before it comes to the top the line broke and the bucket sank down.  Late in spring time, they found it down there on the beach.  It drifted to the beach, on the sandbars on the west side of Cingigglag (Cape Mendenhall).  They found the bucket and everybody recognized it.  So from that experience they think this lake has got a hole down to the ocean. Maybe this water is level with the ocean, I think so, and it has a hole down there the ocean.)

(That Nanwarciar, a long time ago, those young people from Narulkirnarmiut were told to go see it.  They asked them to go and check how deep it is.  The young ones gladly took off.  As they were going off, a bucket, a container they called qaltayag, of sewn skin, they were provided with rope made of seal skin.  When they pinevkar the seal skin they are very strong.

(Perhaps the ancestors back then were amazed by it.  But I don’t know for I wasn’t there with them.  Those were told by them that Angutepig, the ancestor use to tell the story.  The boys were sent there to see how deep the water was, well they were probably young men.  They gave them that bucket and also that rope, for when the seals are cut into strips they are very strong.  They gave them that long skin rope.  So when they young people arrived there, when they got down there, they opened it/made a whole, somewhere they wanted to inside of it.  Then they lowered it down, that skin bucket placing a stone to help it sink into the water, however it didn’t reach the bottom.  It slipped down without reaching the bottom.  Then finally they tried pulling it up.  This is how it was told, those young people pulled it up, however, I suppose they were running on thin ice.  As they tried to yank it up, the rope broke and the bucket sank into the water.  It was in the fall time during the time it was starting to freeze.  Then they forgot about it all winter long.
Kiagluni piyalzria teplinia pengurrlit caangatnun.  Taukut tawa unastait elitaqliniat tauna qaltayag, cali uskurerlun'i.  Tawaken ayagnirluteng cuut umyugiungliniut ukinengqerrsukluku imarpigmun.  Piciurteqaapiarluku-kis pinritliniat ciuliaqatut pic’unrilzngurmeg qaneryarameg ayagniriyussuilam’eng.  Tawa-kis piyuklukuarturluku ukinengqerrsukluku piureluku, tangerrluku tauna qaltayag cuputellraneg tamatum aciakun.  Tawaten tauna qanengssi niitellemtun qanrutektuat.
(Then in the summer it had beached on the shores of Pengurrlit.  Those who had it previously recognized the bucket, it still had the rope.  Then it was from that point on that people thought there was a whole all the way down to the ocean.  It wasn’t a firm conviction, though.  For the ancestors were cautious about fabricating information.  They just speculated that it may be open all the way, for that bucket had come out down there.  They would tell the story and I have heard them tell it.

Kass’at-llu cuvrillruluku, taugg'am niiqarluku-kis pillruluku.  Nunameg qinertartet paqtellrulliniat qerrutulimeg angyarlut'eng.  Et’utaassigluku piyalzriameng alaqliniat et’unruluku imarpigmi.  Tamaana-llu niitelqaqa ilagallrunrilengremki.  Una qanengssi tawaten taktaur.
(Those white people had examined that one, however, they went and checked it out when they heard about it.  Surveyors went and checked it out using an inflated boat.  They came down and checked the depth and found that it was deeper than the ocean.  I also heard that though I wasn’t with them. Okay. That is how long that story is.  I have forgotten exactly what year it was, 1964-65, it was around that time, perhaps.
