This is a great school. Check out the color of the building! You can easily see it from the air from a far because it has a new paint job done in bright orange!

Kwethluk Community School

Kwethluk, Alaska

Date of visit:

Dec. 4th-5th, 2000

This group of students posed for a quick picture after school !

We started out Kwethluk site visit with an evening program for adults only! Suzette Bell along with the folks of Kwethluk helped plan this evening of entertainment that provided free babysitting so the parents could enjoy!
Margaret Nicolai, wife to Kwethluk's homegrown Mathew Nicolai, autographed many of her books for fans, friends and family!
Our evening started out with Margaret reading her book entitled, Kitaq Goes Ice Fishing. This is a story about her husband when he was five years old going ice fishing with his Apa (Grandpa) for the first time. Kwethluk provided a wonderful warm welcome for Margaret as there was standing room only and she ran short on books.I sent those special orders out later!
Someone who does't get her picture taken very often, for she is busy with a camera in her hand for the Tundra Drums, is Daneille Wolfe. We had quite the team that flew out to Kwethluk together. Fun Fun Fun! OOPS! I can't believe I do not have a picture of Suzette Bell... and she was one of the busiest that night!

Right) The office staff - they keep the beat going!

The second part of the parent night included a chance to look at the new literacy totes that all of our schools are receiving through the TLCF grant I work under.
After a quick refreshment break we continued with a presentation on using the Internet. I brought five portable iBook computers and shared with them some surfing tips! YIPPIE!
Smile for the camera!
At end of the evening the kiddos had to come check out all of the excitement we had prior to going home for the night!
The next day!!! Great students and staff kept me hoppin' all day with great enthusiasm and wanting to learn all they could as well as share what they already know about computers!
Check us out in action! These little iBooks ran on airport connections for Internet and batteries for power most all of the day. Because of the heavy use of graphics using more battery power with the younger students, we did have to plug into electricity by the end of the day... but hey, not so bad!!!!!
SMILES! Every time I turned around there was another face greeting me with a smile...
Well... almost everyone.... some folks simply work too hard!
A charter flight with Yukon Aviation, a quick trip out, maybe 15 minutes in the air each way to and from Bethel, and we now have memories that will last a lifetime! For only one overnight there was so much accomplished.
With all of it's many visitors, from our District Superintendent to a teacher and a visiting Alaskan Author, Kwethluk provided wonderful hospitality.

It seems like every site I visit ,there is the need to stay longer. Kwethluk is now another site added to this list. It is the second largest village school in our district. If the river ever freezes, my husband and I will go up to visit our friends, the Hautala's via dog team!!!
