Arts and Crafts

Sonya and Brenda are going to talk about Arts and Crafts of Mekoryuk, Alaska.

In our village of Mekoryuk there are wood carvers, musk-ox knitters, ivory carvers, nylon knitting (recycling of plastic bags), kayaks and basket making.

The wood carvers get the drifted wood from the beach because there are no trees on this island. The wood carvers make masks and other traditional things.

The women make scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens; they collect musk-ox wool. As the musk ox roam the tundra, the fur rubs off onto the bushes. The women pull the fur from the bushes.

One of the elders makes lots of money from ivory earrings, watch bands, necklaces, and cribbage boards.

The women make nylon purses, wallets, toys, and many other things that they get from the beach. There are elders that make grass baskets that are picked from this island.

Not long ago the men gathered together and made a kayak that the students of Mekoryuk tried out on the ocean. The traditional kayaks were made out of skin but the recent one they made was made out of synthetic material.
