Mekoryuk, Alaska

Date of visit:

October 24th, 2000

Mekoryuk is a village located on Nunivak Island. Whereas most of our tundra villages are Yup'ik Eskimos, here on Nunivak Island the folks are Cup'ik Eskimo. The island has a wealth of nature and the stories of how the reindeer and the musk ox came to be here mark Nunivak in history!
Enjoy the following write-ups written by various students in Mekoryuk:

Arts and Crafts, Musk Ox, Nunivak Island, Sports, The Nunivaq Style

This is a frame of a kayak that is displayed on the wall of the school. Although it is hard to read, the parts of the kayak are tagged in Cup'ik.

A beautiful hand crafted mask is on display.
The musk ox. Need I say more?

Lanay Reines runs the show!

Mr. Olrun makes sure we catch our planes and much more!

These students volunteered to stay after school to walk around the dunes of Nunivak with Roy Corral and myself. It was truly beautiful!

Now let me tell you. This was one picture that was hard to get. This fine lady (we'll keep nameless) keeps the school hopping.

Ah, so this is paradise - Alaska style!

No one goes hungry here thanks to this master cook. If you could have only been able to smell the yummy odor that came from this kitchen.

Here we are by the church bell.

Teachers posing for a shot. You should hear this kindergarden teacher sing all of those childhood songs we all know and love - only in Cup'ik. Muriel and I taught years ago in Kilbuck together. It was great seeing her once again.

The boys pose for a picture along side of a fishing boat. This boat looks huge on land yet looks so tiny once out at sea!
Great attitudes flourish at this site as you can see by the grin on Kathy Baldwin's face. She is one of the traveling ILL's (Itinerant Language Leader)

Here are some happy students with full bellies!

One busy lady here. When she is not working with the students she is busy on her computer! Yea!!!
It is picture day here in Mekoryuk. As the students line up here for their school pictures I get them to smile for the camera!

And here are more smiles!

Reading first thing every morning is a wonderful way to start your day!
Here is Nathan, with cup in hand, ready to provide another great day of learning for the students of Mekoryuk.

We leave you now with smiles from a few of the "BOYZ" of Mekoryuk, Alaska. Thanks for checkin' us out!
