This sign can be found on the
building that is currently housing all of Newtok's K-12
students!
One of the many beautiful
views of Newtok, here is a small lake located along
side of the Newtok airport.
This photo is an
exciting image for the folks of Newtok for any
day now the students and staff will be attending
school in this new building! The old school
burned down over seven years ago. Since then,
they have struggled having a K-12 program housed
in the small elementary school.
Ah, The gym in the new
school!!!
Eager students
learning how to use technology along with
cooperation skills in sharing and taking turns.
Peers also become tutors for eachother.
Another view of
the new gym. I can just hear the whistles and
buzzers going off as the Newtok crowd goes
wild!!!
"How did you do
that? Cool!"
Many of these students are using a mouse pad for
the first time. Their little fingers pick up on
this faster than most grown adults!
The main hallway in the
new school.
A little smile says it
all!
Top: The man in
charge of the constuction taking place!
Right: One of the many workers
It turns out that this young man is one of Deb
Vanasse's former students (from last week's
travels). He had seen us together in the airport
but waited until now to come up and talk with
me!
The boardwalks of
Newtok are like arteries that connect all of the
homes of Newtok to the rest of the village. They
are kept in good condition so that four wheelers
can cruise on them as well as
pedestrians!
The elementary
teachers of Newtok are truly amazing. There are
three teachers teaching each with full classes
yet all in the same classroom - WOW!!! Now that
is team work. And to add to that ... they still
welcomed me with open arms!
A local church in
Newtok with a wind mill standing behind it. I
wonder if it produces energy for them?
Prior to working
with the students on computers, when I walked
into their classroom the day before, there was
one group of students silent reading while
another group was taking a spelling test while
yet a third class was actively engaged in an
arts and crafts activity!
Newtok's Post
Office.
Yes, she does
keep this school running top notch!
These ladies know
ho to make an entire school smell like a
delicious restaurant!
During my evening
walk, I came across some students that I had
worked with that day in one of the local stores
keeping busy drawing on a grocery bag . After
sharing a big hug, they wanted to pose for a
picture!
Jon does a great
job teaching a
huge
curriculum for the high school students in the
tiniest
of classroom settings!
Smile for the
camera! Here is another happy couple. Many of
our villages have teachers that are husband and
wife teams. Their enthusiasm and combined energy
make a great addition to any site!
Junior High students have
their classroom housed in the computer
lab.
A shy Site Administrator
wished not to have his picture taken. Although I will not
mention his name, I will mention that his technology
ability gives Newtok the potential in becoming one of
LKSD's top technology schools! I am sure, just like his
students, he is excited about moving into their new
school!!!
