Joann A. Alexie Memorial School

Atmautluak is a small Yup'ik Eskimo village located on the Pitmiktakik River about 20 air miles northwest of Bethel, Alaska.  The village can be reached by small airplane year-round, by boat in the summer and fall and by snow machine and four-wheelers in the winter.

The residents here are excellent subsistence hunters and fishers, which for the most part, is how their families are provided for. There are also some who fish commercially and have jobs at some of the local businesses.  Atmautluak has two stores, a post office, school, Tribal utilities, TribalCouncil, VPSO’s (Village Police Safety Officers), and two churches, Moravian and Russian Ortodox.

Joann A. Alexie Memorial School is a K-12 school that serves around 100 great students. We have 7 certified teachers and a number of associate teachers, aides and support staff.  Besides being an exciting learning environment, the school serves as a community-gathering place.  Basketball tournaments, traditional Yup'ik (Eskimo) dancing, church and village functions are just a few of the events that are enjoyed here at our school.
