The 32nd Annual District Basketball Tournament was dedicated to Mr. Carlton Kuhns this year. Mr. Kuhns got this spectacular tournament up and running back in 1988!

"There was a rapid expansion of small 1A schools from 1979-85. Not only in LKSD, but all over rural Alaska. After having been a Principal in two different village schools, I saw a need for large show-case tournament for the best teams from around our district, and make a big event out of it for parents and community members to attend. My hope was that it would be a delta-wide event and would also improve the quality of play. Around this time, ASAA had ended up with a nine-team bracket for small school basketball due to the statewide explosion of small schools. And LKSD had 1A teams in 3 different regional tournaments. It was rather confusing and disorganized. So in 1987, I proposed to the Region1/ASAA board to give LKSD one permanent berth in the state tournament, and we would have a big tournament to determine the district team. This allowed ASAA to create an 8 team state bracket. To my shock, ASAA approved the change immediately at the October 1987 meeting which meant that we had our first LKSD Small School Tournament in January 1988." - Carlton Kuhns
