For School Board Member Recognition Month, LKSD will feature a profile on each of our Regional Board Members.

Florence P. Therchik is our Board Member holding Seat A, which represents the villages of Newtok, Nightmute, Toksook Bay and Tununak. Ms. Therchik was appointed to fill Seat A in December 2013. She was re-elected in 2015 for the 3-year term she is currently serving. Prior to serving on the Regional Board, Ms. Therchik served on the local ASB in her home village of Toksook Bay.

Her children were the reason she became interested in getting involved with education. She found herself going to school meetings and parent teacher conferences and becoming very interested. She says, “The children in my community motivate me to be involved, especially my baby Daniel who loves being a part of the Islanders.”

Ms. Therchik feels that student learning and parent involvement are educational issues close to her heart. She stated, “Today our children are growing up learning to survive in two worlds – one of our Yup’ik culture and the other is the western culture. Sometimes for a younger child, the educational system becomes confusing, especially when it comes to their reading or writing. We as parents need to get involved in their education so that we can support what is being taught in their school and teach them our culture, as well, at home.

LogoFlorence loves to sew, to yuraq, and go subsistence fishing, but mostly she loves her grandchildren and babies. She enjoys going to community meetings because she learns what the needs are of the community and that way, can learn how to help them or research ways to better help them.

LKSD is proud to have this Leader on our School Board!
