Total is 14 semesters per year, seven class periods per day. Each class must be no less than 250 minutes per week. District recomendations are that math, reading, and writing classes be 375 minutes per week (75 minute class periods).
School generally begins at 8:30 or 9:00 AM and ends at 4:00 or 4:30 PM depending on the schedule for each particular semester. The community does not like beginning school earlier than 8:30 or finishing later than 4:30 and all grades must start and finish school at the same time or very close to the same time so that older students can take their younger siblings to and from school with them. Afternoon classes are usually scheduled as longer periods for 4 days per week so that students have early release every Friday (staff development time). Math, reading, and writing are always scheduled as morning classes in a "block" type schedule.
Local community requires the students to study Yup'ik language and culture throughout high school.
District Requires students to pass Ecology and 4 semesters of other science. This schedule offers 5 semesters of additional science so that a student who fails one semester of science will still have met the district requirements. District Requires students to pass all of the health and physical education and social studies and life skills classes in this schedule.
Electives will be classes based on what teacher is available and what elective topic that teacher is able to and wishes to teach. Generally speaking, it will be some type of vocational education class. Electives are usually scheduled the last period of the day so that all of the teachers have their elective class at the same time, which gives students the opportunity to choose which class they would like to attend.
Individual teachers may (and do) make up independant study programs outside of the regular 2-year rotation for students that have previously failed a class and wish to try to make it up. This is part of our basic phylosophy of giving the students as many chances to succeed as possible.
