The LKSD Special Education program
is comprised of many professionals and paraprofessionals serving a
diverse population of students with special needs. Special education
teachers are assigned to 20 village sites, and two village sites are
being served by a District Office Itinerant Special Education Teacher.
Bethel students are served by special
education teachers in programs located at Bethel Regional High School,
Kilbuck Elementary, M.E. Elementary (which includes a separate
preschool building), Bethel Youth Facility, and Yup'ik Immersion
Charter School. Bethel Alternative Boarding School and Yukon Kuskokwim
Correctional Center are served by our Itinerant Special Education
Teacher.

Special
Education aides are a vital part of our service, offering continuity of
programming for our special education students. In many cases, the
aides are the bilingual program provider for primary age students.
The Lower Kuskokwim School District
presents a unique experience for adventurous individuals working in
remote Native Alaskan villages. The Lower Kuskokwim School District has
the largest school population in Bush Alaska. The twenty-two village
sites are spread over a large geographic area and are accessible only
by small aircraft, boat and snow machine.
