Mardi Gras

The Krewe of Tununak rolled down the elementary wing on Fat Tuesday passing out beads and giving students a taste of Mardi Gras.

After a long day of testing, the high school students celebrated Mardi Gras. They ate King Cake, jambalaya, and red beans and rice, then sorted through the Mardi Gras "throws" for an impromptu parade.

High School teacher Kim Price, originally from New Orleans, had the beads shipped to the village from relatives in Louisiana.

Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, is a holiday celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday. It is the culminating event of the Carnival season that begins on Three Kings Day, January 6. Mardi Gras is basically a big party before the fasting season of Lent, which lasts 40 days in preparation for Easter.
