Happy Holidays
December 21, 2021

Dear parents, students, and the entire LKSD learning community,

With winter break beginning, I want to take a moment to wish you all happy holidays and to express gratitude for your dedication and commitment to our students. Thank you for all you do, every day, to support and encourage our students, their families, and one another to ensure that our students receive the very best education possible in a safe and welcoming environment.

As we begin to look forward to 2022, I also want to share a number of exciting news items:

 Napakiak School Gets Funding! Governor Mike Dunleavy’s recently proposed budget provides funding for the demolition and reconstruction of the William N. Miller K-12 Memorial School in Napakiak. This funding includes the design and construction of the new school facility. As you may know, this has been a long and challenging process, and we are thankful that the new school will be given the funding and priority that is so well deserved and needed. Please see the press release from the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development for more details.

 State Wrestling Tournament: Congratulations to all LKSD student-athletes who competed in the state wrestling tournament held in Anchorage this past weekend. It was an exciting tournament and LKSD was well-represented. Congratulations to those students who earned state titles and to the BRHS team who claimed the Division II boys state championship. Former BRHS wrestling coach Bob Graham was inducted into the Alaska Wrestling Hall of Fame at the tournament as well.

 LKSD Board Member Clarence Daniel Honored: LKSD School Board President Clarence Daniel was honored as the 2021 recipient of the Don McKinnon Educational Excellence and Human Recognition Award at the annual Alaska Superintendent's Conference for his dedication and service to the school district and communities. Congratulations, Mr. Daniel on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for all you do for the students of LKSD!

 Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) Annual Conference – Professional Boundaries Day: For the past year, LKSD has been part of the Alaska Professional Boundaries Working Group, which includes organizations, schools and child advocacy groups working towards keeping children safe through policies, trainings and education. Last month, I was able to share all LKSD has learned from our Best Practices Safety Audit and implementation of Board
Policy 5141.42 (Professional Boundaries of Staff with Students) at the AASB conference. We are confident that the measures we are taking will help us consistently strengthen and improve upon our most important goal: to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff, and our community as a whole.

I hope you have a joyous and safe holiday break and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

Sincerely,
Kimberly Hankins
Superintendent
