Ten students from schools around the Lower Kuskokwim School District put their reporting skills to the test while covering the Kuskokwim 300 sled dog race last month.

Students from Kwethluk, Quingagak, Nightmute, Mertarvik and Kasigluk flew into Bethel to cover the race.

Katie Basile, one of LKSD’s media camp instructors, said students live streamed several events from the K300, took photos and interviewed three mushers via Zoom.

“I was really proud of how engaged they were and how they connected with the mushers,” Basile said. “They would get off the call and be completely stoked about some of the answers they got.”

In the camp, students learned how to write open versus closed questions and follow up questions. Students also learned how to write a script for broadcast introductions and how to manage a livestream.

LKSD’s media camp began in 2013 as a way to prepare students for career and readiness paths.

“It’s a new skill set for students to learn,” Basile said. “But it can also be a career path for others.”

One former LKSD student is currently interning at Alaska Public Media in Anchorage.

“Our main goal was to get a livestream of the race up, and we partnered with KYUK. So the livestream went on the KYUK Facebook page, and they livestreamed four different events throughout the weekend," Basile said.
