Fall Semester Update
From Superintendent Hankins

September 12, 2022

Dear parents, students, and the entire LKSD learning community,

We are already into the fifth week of the school year and learning and activities are well underway. Student enrollment in LKSD has increased from the 2021-2022 school year by over 100 students, district-wide, and we’ve been happy to welcome students back to school! Fall MAP testing has been completed and student learning data is being utilized across the district.

Recently, LKSD held its fall-break which is aligned with part of the fall moose hunting season. During the break, LKSD educators met in Bethel for the district’s Annual Fall Conference. The theme of the conference this year was Every Living Thing Can Learn. The theme was taken from the book Yupik Words of Wisdom, transcriptions and translations from the Yup’ik, by Alice Reardan with Marie Meade.

It was great to be back in person after hosting the event virtually the past two years as it offered everyone a chance to connect with colleagues face-to-face. Despite some early adversity from the weather, all school sites made it to Bethel and the district hosted over 400 people for the three-day event. LKSD offered over 250 individual professional development sessions to staff, provided by over 60 presenters. Our closing ceremony featured Ayaprun Jones, a recently retired long-time LKSD educator, who imparted wisdom and led the group in Yuraq. Educators left the event with increased knowledge on LKSD Best Practices, curriculum, technology, social-emotional learning, and strategies for instruction…to name a few!

Fall sports are underway across LKSD! Cross country running began in late July, followed by the start of NYO and mixed-six volleyball. In Bethel, swimming and volleyball are also underway, in addition to cross country running. The start of the wrestling season is just around the corner. Many thanks to our coaches for their hard work in offering sports opportunities for our students!

Please make sure to check out the LKSD website (
https://www.lksd.org) for additional information about district programs as well as the LKSD Facebook page for updates on happenings across the district.

Thank you for your continued support of LKSD. Wishing you well in this fall-time season.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Hankins
Superintendent
