DISTRICT UPDATE
FROM SUPERINTENDENT HANKINS

November 16, 2022

Dear parents, students, and the entire LKSD learning community,

It’s been an incredibly busy first semester thus far. The holidays are fast approaching, and it sure seems like time is flying by! I want to take a moment to provide you with a few updates about things happening in LKSD.

AK STAR Assessment Data

The Alaska System of Academic Readiness (AK STAR) assessment data for the spring 2022 test administration was recently released by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development. This data provides our teachers, students, and families with information to help support students in their academic development. District-wide in reading, 4.13% of students scored advanced/proficient while 95.87% scored approaching proficient/needs support. District-wide in math, 2.05% of students scored advanced/proficient while 97.95% scored approaching proficient/needs support. District and individual school results can be found on the EED website. The District had anticipated the decrease in student assessment scores as scores nationally are down from pre-pandemic levels. As a district, we know that students were impacted by the disruption to student learning caused by the pandemic and the focus of the district is now on growth and recovery. LKSD remains invested in strengthening the capacity to use data such as the AK STAR assessment data. Data helps provide meaningful insights to target instruction to increase learning and help students reach their highest academic potential.

Student Activities

Student activities continue to be in full swing across the district. Mixed-six volleyball regionals take place this coming weekend in Toksook Bay, the fall NYO season is wrapping up, the regional wrestling tournament is just a few weeks away, and basketball season begins at the end of the month. Additionally, we look forward to the upcoming JH speech contest, the FLL Robotics competition, and the ANSEP Career Explorations Academy, all happening in December. I want to offer my thanks and appreciation to all of our coaches, chaperones, and event volunteers for helping make student activities available for LKSD students. I also want to thank our students for their participation and for the excellent sportsmanship we’ve seen across the district this school year.

Communications

Keep up on all the happenings at LKSD! We have increased the frequency of our posts on Facebook and our news stories on the District’s website. There are great things happening around LKSD and we encourage you to check out the District’s Facebook page and website to keep informed. I want to thank all LKSD Site Administrators for their help in sharing the great things happening in every LKSD school.

As always – thank you for your continued support of LKSD!

Sincerely,

Kimberly Hankins

Superintendent
