Karen Paul from Kwigillingok has been selected to be the University of Alaska Fairbanks Outstanding Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education student for the 2015-16 academic year.

Ms. Paul, an associate teacher, was recognized on March 25th in Kwigillingok during a school assembly, and the district is sending her to attend an awards breakfast in Fairbanks in April to celebrate her accomplishments. She received a medal from LKSD to wear in Fairbanks at the awards breakfast, and at her graduation ceremony in May.

While maintaining her position as an associate teacher in Kwigillingok, Ms. Paul spent the fall semester as an intern under the mentoring of certified teacher Tobias Friebe, and during spring semester she has been interning with Bill Wilkinson. At the end of the spring semester, she will become certified by the State of Alaska as an elementary teacher. She is a role model for students and for other Associate Teachers in the district working to become certified.

Ms. Paul began her work on the UAF campus in the Fall of 1990 and completed about half of her coursework before returning home. With family, community and teaching responsibilities, she took a break from her studies for a few years but began again in earnest in 2004 and took at least one class a semester until she was ready for this year — her student teaching/internship year.

Carlton Kuhns, Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services stated, “This a testament to the diligence and commitment that she has demonstrated in the pursuit of her teaching degree. We are all so very proud of her efforts, and look forward to many years as an outstanding teacher.”  Congratulations Karen, on setting such a great example and for completing your degree program with such a wonderful honor.
