Do you think you could read over two million words in one year? Alexie Evan, a seventh grade student at Rocky Mountain School in Goodnews Bay, AK did just that and was selected to receive a national reading award from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Alexie was nominated by his teacher, Sherri Carmichael.

Read 180 is a reading intervention curriculum adopted by LKSD to increase reading skills of students reading below grade level. Alexie was born with hearing difficulties and had to have surgery, which delayed the development of his language skills. Two years ago when Alexie began the Read 180 program, he was reading significantly below grade level. Through his commitment to improve his reading skills, he increased his reading score by 388 Lexile points and is now above grade level. Because of his academic gains, Alexie was recently selected to attend the Academy of the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) with students from all over the state.

Alexie said, “I don’t know what it is, but there is something inside me that makes me want to do well. In the past year my reading and math skills have improved so much and next year I am going to skip a grade and go straight into high school. I work hard every day on Read 180 software, I read books during break time at school and at home, and I plan to keep working hard so I can graduate from high school and go to college to study science.”

He is extraordinarily dedicated to his education and it has been wonderful to see his confidence blossom alongside his reading skills. Other students look up to him as a leader and his kindness and support for his peers are as marked as his academic gains. He is a joy to teach and I am so proud of everything he has accomplished”, stated Alexie’s teacher, Sherri Carmichael.

Pizza delivered by plane

How do you celebrate having a national reading award winner at your school? With a pizza party, of course! Last week 22 fresh pizzas and a full sheet cake arrived in Goodnews Bay to celebrate. Staff, students and Alexie’s family enjoyed the rare treat of fresh, not frozen pizza.

Alexie won $1,000 to use for his education and Rocky Mountain School received $1,000 of HMH materials to use in classrooms.
