This year, eight LKSD teams participated in the Southwest Regional FTC Robotics competition on January 27, 2016. Three teams will be advancing to compete in the Alaska State Robotics Championships that take place in Anchorage, Alaska on February 19-20, 2016. These teams include the Sunchasers of the STEM Ready Academy, the Bethel Regional High School team and Team Stewie of Kwigillingok.

Student teams had to qualify to advance to the state competition by preparing their robot to run in 10-minute judging sessions. In December, a scrimmage for the robots was held at the Alaska National Guard Readiness Center in Bethel, Alaska to help prepare their robot and team to compete in future competitions.

FTC Robotics is for high school students and incorporates math, engineering, and teamwork to design, build and program a robot. Each year presents students with a different game theme. This year’s theme is called RES-Q. To earn points on the playing field, students need to park their robot on a mountain, push blocks and wiffle balls into scoring zones, or hang from a pull-up bar. Other ways teams gain points are by entering engineering notebooks and information about their robot’s improvements/goals/achievements, conducting community outreach, and mentoring younger kids to encourage them to join First Lego League (FLL) and pursue STEM careers.
