March 17 Corona Virus UpdateCovid-19 (Corona Virus) Update for LKSD Schools

Updated 3/17/20

This is an update on the school cancellation notice issued Friday, March 13 2020. After Superintendent Walker issued the notice cancelling classes for the week of March 16-20, Governor Dunleavy issued a Statewide Health Mandate ordering the closure of schools to students and activities until March 30, 2020.

At this time we do not know if the cancellation of classes will be continued past March 29. All LKSD facilities are closed for any and all activities and will remain closed until further notice. We are working with our staff to develop plans for home delivery of course work so students can continue their education.

During this closure and for the foreseeable future we will continue to provide meals for students. Each school site is working to find the best ways to make meals available. Please contact your child’s school if you are unsure of the availability of meals.

Yesterday, March 16, 2020, the State announced that two additional individuals have been tested presumptive positive for the COVID-19 virus. While we cannot predict the future, this likely means community spread is beginning in Alaska. The question we are all asking is will the closure of schools continue after the current Health Mandate expires on March 29, 2020. We do not know what will happen, but if we are experiencing community spread, it is likely the closure will be extended. That is why our teachers and support staff are working to develop plans for home delivery of education during this time of cancellation of classes.

It is important to note that the LKSD leaders are in daily contact with the Commissioner of Education in Alaska, as well as and other state leaders, to make the best decisions we can given the circumstance and uncertainty we face.

As we receive updates and as decisions are made we will be sure to update our communities via FaceBook and the LKSD Webpage as well as School Messenger.
