June 26, 2020
Dear parents, students, staff, and LKSD communities:

The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) has requested each school district build a comprehensive plan for teaching and learning for the upcoming school year, using DEED’s Alaska Smart Start 2020: Restart & Reentry Framework Guidance for K-12 Schools, as a guide.

Over the past several weeks, an LKSD planning team has been working to design LKSD’s Smart Start plan to be implemented in August when we welcome students back for the 2020-2021 school year. This plan provides a tiered approach to educational delivery and details clear, actionable steps that are necessary for teaching and learning to continue throughout the 2020-21 school year.

The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, in partnership with the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) have developed the definitions of a low, medium, and high risk school environment along with the parameters for safely operating schools in each risk level. Please know that when determining the risk level at which to operate, LKSD will work closely with YKHC to make decisions that are responsive to our communities and their needs.

Using the guidance from both DEED and DHHS, LKSD has determined the instructional model that will be implemented during times of low, medium, and high risk, as indicated in the tables below.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent need to best prepare our facilities and staff to welcome students back, the district has made the following calendar adjustment:

LKSD schools will open to students on Monday, August 24th.
Working in partnership with YKHC, the district currently projects that all LKSD schools will open at the medium risk* level.

*Please note this is subject to change. LKSD will continue to seek guidance from YKHC regarding risk level for opening.

The parameters for the medium risk level call for limited class sizes and will result in ahybrid model of instructional delivery with both in-person learning and remote learning from home. Parents and/or guardians can expect detailed schedule information from schools in the coming weeks.

Below please find components of the draft LKSD Smart Start plan for review. A short survey regarding the plan and place to provide plan feedback is available using this link:

During this time of a global pandemic, LKSD’s mission to ensure bilingual, culturally appropriate and effective education for all students remains a central focus. In addition, the district aims to provide equitable educational support and opportunities for all students, all school year, throughout this pandemic period.
