Fall Conference 2019: Leading with the Heart

Teachers Yuraq at the Fall ConferenceTeachers from around the district convened in Bethel for the LKSD Annual Fall Conference - Quyurramta 2019: Leading with the Heart, the first week of September. 

The conference was opened Wednesday by Superintendent Dan Walker and followed by a welcome and keynote by Dr. Steven Atwater. Dr. Atwater was named Alaska's 2013 superintendent of the year and currently works as the Executive Dean of the Alaska College of Education of the University of Alaska Southeast. Dr. Atwater spoke about the importance of building meaningful relationships with our students and connecting culture to the content taught in our classrooms.

The conference continued Thursday with Assistant Superintendent Kimberly Hankins speaking on the educator as "warm demander".  Judith Kleinfeld coined the term "warm demander" to describe teachers who most successfully supported student achievement by expecting great things from their students, convincing them of their own brilliance, and helping them reach their potential in a disciplined, structured environment. 

Dr. Panigkaq Agatha John-Shields gives the Thursday keynote

Dr. Panigkaq Agatha John-Shields provided the Thursday morning keynote. Dr. Panigkaq Agatha John-Shields works as the Term Assistant Professor in Indigenous Education/Educational Leadership at UAA. She opened her Keynote by inviting LKSD to Yuraq together.

It was also announced that Mr. Jon LaValle of Bethel Regional High School is LKSD's Teacher of the year for 2019! Congratulations, Mr. LaValle! 

We were grateful to have our LKSD team of educational professionals together for three days of development.
