Spring Semester Update
From Superintendent Hankins

February 1, 2023

Dear parents, students, and the entire LKSD learning community,

We are a few weeks into the new semester and there is a lot happening across the District. You can stay up-to-date with LKSD events and news by accessing the LKSD Facebook page and/or the LKSD website. I also encourage you to visit your local school’s website and Facebook page to keep abreast of events and news specific to your child’s school. Below are key highlights of upcoming student activities and events for this spring semester:

  • Science Fair, February 2-4

  • Spelling Bee, February 8

  • Battle of the Books, Multiple dates in February and March

  • Small Schools Basketball Tournament, March 4-6

  • 3A Basketball Tournament, March 9-11

  • Festival of Arts, Month of April

  • Spring NYO District Tournament, April 13-15

  • LKSD Dance Festival, April 24-27

The District is looking forward to an exciting week of basketball March 4-11 as we host both the Small Schools tournament and the State 3A tournament at Bethel Regional High School. My sincere gratitude to all of our student activities coaches, advisors, and chaperones for their work in providing extra- curricular opportunities for our students.

2023 Legislative Priorities

The 33rd Alaska State Legislature convened on January 17, 2023. As with other school districts throughout Alaska, LKSD is feeling the effects of rising costs and flat funding. Advocacy for an increase in the base student allocation is one of the top priorities of the LKSD Board of Education, along with efforts to improve educator recruitment and retention, and reliable and adequate funding for major maintenance projects and school construction.

All stakeholders can play a role in advocacy by contacting our legislators, Senator Lyman Hoffman and Representative CJ McCormick.

Thank you for your continued support of LKSD.

Wishing you well,

Kimberly Hankins
Superintendent
