The Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (ANSEP) Acceleration Academy is a collaboration between the Lower Kuskokwim School District and University of Alaska Fairbanks, Kuskokwim Campus. Begun in the Fall of 2021, the program enables students to study college classes while in high school. Students can accumulate college credits (in some cases over 100) while still in high school. Credits are earned from the University of Alaska system.

Students can start in 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, and end their senior year of high school in the academy. They take all their classes as dual credit courses, earning both high school and college credits, at the UAF Kuskokwim Campus; the academy follows the UAF college academic calendar. Classes are online or in person, depending on the professors available. Although ANSEP leans towards science and engineering degrees, the Acceleration Academy welcomes college ready students in all areas of interest.

Bethel is the ANSEP Acceleration Academy’s third location, and the first in a rural area off of the road system. It is also the first ANSEP academy to provide housing, which enables students throughout the school district to apply.

Tad Lindley, a retired teacher from LKSD, leads the Bethel program. He’s the regional director for ANSEP in Western Alaska.

To qualify for the ANSEP Acceleration Academy, students must pass tests to place into college courses in math and English. Students who are not Alaska Native can also apply. Students entering high school who are interested in enrolling in the ANSEP Acceleration Academy in Bethel can find out more and apply online.
