The communities of Napakiak and Newtok continue to experience coastal/river erosion and were both heavily impacted by the recent typhoon.
The summer demo project in Napakiak is wrapping up, and work on the foundation for the new school was completed this summer. The project's next phase will include the new school construction and continued monitoring of the existing site, including the impact of erosion on the distance from the river bank, and plans for continued retreat.

In Newtok the district is moving forward with project planning for work to occur this winter and next summer. Similar to Napakiak, plans are being put in place for a managed retreat from the eroding bank while at the same time finishing the design and the foundation project of the new school in Mertarvik.
