Home Links Kits Develop Yugtun at Home

Yugtun Home Links kits are heading your way!

In an expanded distribution, there are now 1,200 households that will receive an activity kit to practice Yugtun language at home.

Yupik materials

Though students have made great strides in Yugtun language learning through the DLE and Immersion models of instruction in your school, staff recognize that some aspects of Yugtun language can better be developed at home. Home Links kits aim to help with this in a fun, interactive way that families can do on their own time.

Prior to the new kits, students at two test sites have previously received volleyballs, books, mp3 players, and photo albums with family name terms on them. These resources were a fun way to develop language skills outside of the classroom.

This month, kits will go to all K-6 students that took the  Yup’ik proficiency test, called the Yugtun Piciryaranek Qaneryaranek-llu Cuqyun (YPQC), earlier this spring. The new kits contain:

  • Berry picking bucket with questions on the side that help observe and discuss natural surroundings while picking berries
  • Baggie full of ingredients to make assaliaqs (fry bread) to share with Elders and questions for students to ask Elders about their culture and language
  • Books to share Vocabulary pages - this time, featuring fish!

We are excited for students to put these materials into use.
